I wrote my first blogpost on my first blog in 2012 and it took a whole lot of courage for me to upload it. I remember at the time I was battling with insecurities and I was kind of an introvert so I couldn’t fathom the idea of sharing things about myself for the world to see, especially people in my life. But I did it, I pressed sent and I would have never imagined how that first step could change my life forever.
I used to write about my feelings a lot around that time, especially relating to friendship and relationships and then I moved on to writing about my adventures! Throughout the years of blogging, there has been a lot of positive experiences that came out from it and if you are considering starting a blog, I hope this will motivate you to take the leap!
Improvement in my writing!
I have always loved writing but blogging has taken my writing to a whole new level. Because of blogging, I was encouraged to enrol in a creative writing class for a few weeks and I realised what potential lies beneath the surface of my writing and has encouraged me to start writing a book! I would have never thought it was possible for me to write a book or even be encouraged to do so, but alas through blogging, that book is now a work in progress!
Meeting like minded people that have become good friends offline!
I have had people reach out to me and I have also done that as well through comments and private messages, and I have found that the online community of blogging from the bloggers to the readers, to be very welcoming. When people see themselves in you or can relate to your struggles, thoughts and experiences, they tend to form a bond that I cannot really explain. I remember one of my good friends I made through blogging and I were discussing the oddness of how we met and it got me thinking of how wonderful this whole blogging thing turned out to be. And truly this can be replicated on other forms of social media as well and not just through blogging. So long as you put out things that interest you, there will be someone out there that can relate to it and will enjoy it!
- Increased my confidence and Encouraged me to go out more!
Because I loved writing about what I got up to, it encouraged me to go out more and explore new places so I can share it with my readers. And because of that, it meant certain times I went out by myself which gave me the opportunity to meet more people. I also felt more confident in myself, I am not sure if it was because I had a purpose and so I felt like I needed to do whatever it was I was doing to be able to create more content. Some exciting things I have tried was attending Fashion festivals and brand showcases, meeting people who turned out to be friends in real life, Attending an event that ended up with me in the Houses of Parliament for a special session and so much more.
Got freelance work opportunities!
I applied to be a freelancer for Korea.net which is the official website of the South Korean government, through my blog I was able to show samples of what I had written in the past and what type of content I could deliver which got me accepted. This was an exciting opportunity for me as I got press passes to attend events, do interviews and so much more. I reapplied for the program again this year and I got accepted again! I also worked with She Leads Africa and Facebook for their SheHive in London as a content creator and that was very exciting cos the event took place in the Facebook Office in London and the space was amazing, far beyond what you imagined! I was also opportune to work with brands such as Timabee.
Research for posts has increased my knowledge!
I have written about so many different topics over the course of the last 5 years and for some of these articles I had to do more research to supplement what I already knew about the topics. I also have tried a lot of new products ranging from skincare to tech to restaurants and experiences.
So I hope some of my experiences encourages you to take the leap and start a blog, in fact not just a blog, just believe in your idea and dream and take the leap. If you truly love what you do, everything will fall in place.
All the best!!
