I was talking to my sister earlier and like most of my conversations lately, it was focused on development economics. We were discussing poverty traps and I was trying to make a point to her and I went “SDGs….”
and she was like what is that?
and I said to her it is post MDG.
and she had no clue what I was talking about.
So I said it stood for Sustainable Development Goals.
See it was my assumption that everybody that had access to social media knew about these goals, and at the very least had a vague idea as to why they exist and why they are important. But I was wrong.
Because my progressive thinking sister who is the perfect prototype for ‘Generation Y’/the millennials, Kids who spend more time online than they do off, didn’t know about it and further investigation made me realise, so did a lot of others.
Even after the level of exposure the goals have gotten, it seems more needs to be done.
So because I believe in the social impact and good this goals represent, how it is making the world we live in better, and how much it has improved the lives of people at all levels including the grassroots, I have taken it upon myself to be an unofficial ambassador for the SDGs.
So what are these SDGs and why do I think you need to know about them?
Well the United Nations came up with Agenda 2030 with the sole goal of “transforming our world and making it better”. In simple terms, these goals will spearhead the improvement of our Environment, Economies, peace and security and our societies as a whole. These goals comprise of 169 targets in total which have been condensed into 17 headlines.
I believe this is very ambitious especially with a 15 years deadline, however looking at it from a social point of view, the work that has been done so far, has brought about some level of success. Better changes no matter how little affects the life of someone who wouldn’t have been able to survive. So by providing tool sets to them, it creates an environment where they are able to have a chance to support themselves and even pass it on and give others a foundation to do the same.
So these are like building blocks towards a future we want. By giving such a deadline, it means we work harder, maybe smarter and quicker because there is a target. In my opinion, by 2030, we just push forward again and keep doing this until the world is transformed.
In summary, there is a need for educating on the SDGs with the intention of encouraging a system of ambassadorship where people pass on the knowledge and skills they have acquired. So check out the photo above for each goal and its number, and CLICK HERE to read more about it.
Go a step further and become an ambassador for one of the goals, and let us know in the comments which one you adopt…..
Lets inform the world about SDGs.
It is our collective efforts after all that will bring about the changes we desire!
